Prevail is from Nubar’s new Modern Matte collection. In the US I think they are only being sold in a collection pack of four different shades, but I managed to pick up a lonesome Prevail on Ebay last week.
A greyed-out purple that is packed with shimmer, I was stunned by how fabulous this is. I swear, this is the fastest drying polish I’ve ever used. Totally bone dry within five minutes.
The word on the street is that you shouldn’t use base coat with matte polishes. Apparently it messes with the formula. So you can make out my lumps and ridges here – not a lot of margin for error with a matte.
I did three coats as I was having a bit of trouble getting it even (my nails were at fault, not the consistency of the polish, which was perfect). And as I said, completely dry in minutes.
The pics are a little bit deceptive as the only way I could get a decent, colour-true shot was to use my flash. Trust me, there’s no gloss here, it is a perfect matte – shimmery but not shiny. Just before taking it off, I did try a shiny topcoat on it to see what it would be like, and it was gorgeous. A beautiful colour that can be worn in two ways – I’m over the moon!
Here’s the closeup. I really love this shade. And lifespan was excellent for a matte – it got through three days of wear and put up with excessive typing and it still looked pretty good. And don’t forget, Nubar polishes are free of formaldehyde, phthalates, and toluene. Happy days!
You can see the rest of the Modern Matte collection here, on Brooke’s blog. Turns out she is my psychic nail sister as we were both wearing this on the same day, with no collusion or discussion. That’s pretty remarkable when you think about how many polishes we must own between us!
In other news, I think we’ve found our wedding venue. I knew it was good as I had to fight back the tears when we walked in. Not because it was bad (as some of them have been), but because it was so beautiful and perfect for us. For the first time I could really visualise the day. So, dress and venue sorted inside a week, and not a bridezilla in sight – what’s all the fuss about?!

Although I am a shiny girl i like that one a lot
Hey Helen,
Just so none of the US girls despair, these are being sold individually here as well. =]
They are discounted a bit in the set of four, but they can be had at regular price on their own. =D
HTH!

Lovely! I enjoy mattes, they’re just something different. I’ve used base coats with mine (Zoya) and had no problem. So happy to hear your wedding planning is coming along well! To me, that would be a sign that you both made the right decision to marry 🙂 Guess what came in the mail today? That means I finally have everything in order and will go to the post office Monday with your fun-filled package! Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Helen that is wonderful news about finding your wedding venue. Wish I could see it. I’m so happy for the both of you. Are you going to have a big wedding? When’s the date? Love that matte on you. I also wore a base coat. Didn’t change anything. I haven’t picked these up yet. I have to go look at them further.
Wow – you’re like SuperBride or something! Your fiancee must be thanking his lucky stars you’re so calm about everything 🙂
Hi! I like the Nubar mattes, they’re great colors! But I do believe they are being sold individually in the US, I was checking them out last week and they have them on the site. Also – congrats on two big things accomplished on your wedding this week!!!
When grey and purple get together, beautiful things happen. Oh wait, does that sound like a wedding toast? What wonderful news you found your location!
Love mattes! Venue sounds like a good ‘un!
[…] to the other mattes I have tried – Zoya Loredana and Nubar Prevail, Matte Smoke is incredibly smooth to the touch. It doesn’t have the mottled, suede-y effect […]
You could use the Nubar male nails matt as i use that as both a base coat and a top coat for any nail varnish i want to make matt…can be fun experimenting with metallic shades to see how to they look matt!
