Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll probably be aware of
Illamasqua’s latest offering – nail quills. These have been on several blogs more timely than ours, and I know that nail fantatics seem to fall firmly on one side of the fence or the other when it comes to these.
Personally, much as I love the gothic look and often gear my makeup and clothes towards the darker side of life, I can’t say that these are doing much for me. One again, I salute Illamasqua in their visionary ability to come up with something new and innovative, time after time after time, but I just don’t think I could comfortably wear these.
However, if you love this look and want to own a pair of nail quills yourself, or score some for the fetishist in your life, then head on over to Illamasqua’s website where you can pick up a pair for £35.
Alongside the debut of the nail quills, Illamasqua have launched a co-ordinating nail varnish to work with them, or be worn alone.
Scorn is a velvety smooth black matte polish. It makes sense that it is being released as a tie-in with the nail quills as if it was just a random release on its own, I wouldn’t really know what was happening. As we all know, matte nail polish was all over the blogosphere as much as 18 months ago.
I have to say that, as per usual, anything by Illamasqua can be relied on in terms of quality, application and final finish. This was two coats. It is smooth, even and applies like a dream. I had zero cleanup, and better still, as with most mattes, it was dry in about five minutes. Win.
What I like about the formula of Scorn is that I didnt need to buff my nails to within an inch of their lives to smooth out all the lumps and bumps before applying it. It’s thick enough to gloss (as it were) over the defects. And, I went against all the old wives tales about how to apply a matte varnish, and
used a basecoat. No problems at all. AND, it has gone a day of solid typing and shows no tipwear or chips. I thought I was over matte, yet I had no problem wearing this for a couple of days. The satiny finish made me keep touching it and stroking it – it feels lovely.
So what can I say? If you still love the matte trend then this is a great one to have in your collection. If you want a well performing black that can double up as a glossy shade as well as a matte just add a layer of topcoat. I can see this being a big hit with many chaps out there who like to sport a dark manicure from time to time.
This was sent to me for review purposes. Illamasqua nail varnishes retail at £13.00 and can be purchased here.

while i love the satin finish of this…i just don’t know if the price is justifiable. there are a lot of amazing black mattes on the market and just because illamasqua have now release one (quite late in the game i might add) doesn’t really mean i want to buy it! it’s gorgeous though…i think it’s just not for me!

I love the satin black. It looks really good on! I might have to add it to my collection.
I like the quills, the look of them anyway. I’d like them on all nails. I also love this polish. I think it’s the best black matte I’ve seen. Really love this on you.
