Well, this was a surprise. I only have a few Essie polishes and they sit quite happily in my stash, often overlooked. This is mainly due to how small the bottles are.
I bought Damsel In A Dress way back in the spring, and this is the first time I have got round to using it.
Perfect for Autumn, I keep wanting to call this Damson, instead of Damsel. It is a rich, plummy purple, with amazing shine and silver glimmer streaked all the way through.
I always
struggle a little bit with Essie polishes. I find the brush is too small and it takes me ages to keep dipping it in and out of the bottle in order to get perfect coverage. I timed this and it took ten minutes from start to finish to paint one decent coat on my nails. That’s practically unheard of for me, even though I have big nails.
This was two coats in the end, and was perfectly opaque and glimmery. I can’t believe how stunning this looked – the silver shimmer makes it stand apart from other purples or damson shades for Autumn.
So, despite the fact that I (and the rest of us, I am sure) own a lot of wintery vampy purples, this one really is different and I love it.
Who’d have thought that Essie, general purveyor of pale pinks, could come up with something quite so juicy? What do you think?

I wasn’t sure whether to buy this when it came out last year as I thoiught it might be too similar to LPAM etc, but seeing it on you is making me think maybe I should reconsider! And I agree, their brush is too small! I have some mini ones and they are a nightmare, but other than that I do really rate Essie’s formula. Have you seen the new ones? There is a lovely blue called Midnight Cami.
I have a sparkly red Essie (Wild Thing I think) that came free with a magazine (ok, I bought the mag especially!), and I think it probably *would* be nice if I had had the time and energy to put on a third coat. Two just looked watery and chipped after a couple of days. I think three coats at a time even on my short nails would quickly empty such a small bottle…
I’ve not seen this one before, but it’s very pretty on you! The shimmer is especially nice. I really like Essie polishes, the finish on them is so nice.
This is so pretty and vampy. I’m sorry to hear that it took so long painting your nails. They are small brushes. At least the out come was worth it, in the end!
I only have Ruby Slippers and I have only used it once. Can’t say I noticed the brush.
I can’t say I’m keen on Damsel and Essie generally is such a wishy-washy bunch…Not on my wishlist.
I have about 20+ Essie polishes. That’s a gorgeous shade on you. I like the plum color. I usually don’t wear the Essie polishes. But tonight I decided to take off the Halloween manicure and use the Essie polish. I’m wearing Mesmerize. It’s a gorgeous dark blue/green creme. I love it.
It’s totally different to LPAM as this one has a silver sheen on it whereas LPAM has shimmer and looks more glitzy.
Mini Essies?? Good lord – I can’t imagine such a thing – they are small enough as it is!
They are tiny aren’t they? Maybe a good old layer of topcoat would help? Still, for a freebie that’s not a bad one.
Thanks Mary – yes, it was the shimmer that got me on this one. Love it and it was such a nice surprise.
Hi Velvet. Thankyou – it is a gorgeous shade and I love it, The brushes are good and accurate but yes, small – it takes a while for me!
Essie has a rep for being a bit safe, hence the fact that I don’t own a lot of her stuff. This is a good one though – I think I just got lucky. Mind you, I am wearing a stunning one today so watch this space.
I don’t have Mesmerize but I have seen it on a lot of blogs and I do really like it. When Essie go beyond the pink and red, they do it well sometimes.
