I’m feeling disappointed. Less than two weeks ago, I had red and fuschia pink highlights put in my hair. Today I have ginger locks although the permanent pink colour is still vibrant.
I’ve had variations of red hair before and while it looks amazing, the colour fades quickly. I’ve preferred toffee and brown highlights but on my last visit, Emma who’s been colouring my hair for over four years, blew me away with a new look. She always looks forward to my visits as I never ask for the same thing twice and trust her enough to go venture boldly with the dye.
Immediately I cried that it won’t last and she invited me to return for a complimentary toner to be added in between visits so I am going to pop in at the weekend and speak to her about it.
I’ve also been frequently toying with the idea of going back to black, my natural hair colour but get sucked back into highlights. However, now I believe the time has come to take that step and I think my decision will be helped by the bombshell my hair stylist dropped – he’s moving up to being a manager but at a different branch 10 miles away. My present salon is a 5 minute walk from my home. This means I’m in the difficult situation of getting my hair cut by him and my hair coloured by Emma in different area codes. I hate starting all over again and building trust with a new person but I am not going to drop the stylist so I will travel the distance for him to cut my hair.
As for the colour? It feels like the right time to take a break and rejuvenate my follicles, not to mention saving £100 on every visit. It saddens me a little but a cut is more important and I’d like to save some money too and sitting in a chair for 3 hours is tiresome.
My dilemma is, with my impending visit in four weeks where I will see both of my favourite salon geniuses together for the final time, do I choose the same highlights again or simply ask for my hair to be dyed back to my natural colour? I’ve been having my hair coloured for almost five years so it will come as a relief to stop that for a while. I won’t also have to worry about the colour washing out every time I wash my hair, and when you frequent the gym, that’s usually 3 to 4 times a week.
It is a shame hair colouring hasn’t advanced in tackling the problem with red hair. For someone with hair as dark as mine, there aren’t a lot of options available and I wouldn’t even consider bleaching it first to go for a lighter shade!
Ladies, what do you think? I’ve made up my mind on ceasing the highlights but I am undecided on what to do about for my next visit.
Sheenie
I love being red but have abandoned it last couple of years as get sick of it nt lasting which is a great shame.
Do you want to go back to black or do you still want something more exciting?
Think yourself lucky I travel 80 miles to get my hair done!
It’s not healthy to keep colouring it every six weeks, is it? It really dries the ends. Bad enough using hair straighteners on top of all this.
I’d like to go back to my natural colour though I am not sure it it will be a temporary measure or indefinitely…possibly the former. The plus point of having black hair is, like clothes, it goes well with every shade of make-up and shoes!
It seems like a good idea to take the plunge now rather than put it off for the next visit or try at the new salon my stylist will be working at. He said I could get my hair coloured at his new place but I have loyalty towards poor Emma! I can’t bear to let it grow out and have the marmalade ends glaring at me. 🙁
I remember you travel so far for your salon! You don’t get more loyal than you, Britny!
Cut is paramount.
I can’t show myself in public without highlights so I would move with my stylist and get the colourist at the new branch to do it.
Your hair looks very shiny. Are you really worried about the condition?
What about blue or violet? Would that last any better and not need reviving/refreshing so often?
Tricky. But it looks like you will have to use the next visit to go back to your natural shade and say goodbye to Emma.
Jenni, I’ve never tried blue but am no stranger to plum tones. I have gone three months without a trip to the hairdresser’s and leaving it for that long seems to result in dry hair although I was told to leave conditioner in overnight and wash it off the next morning. I forgot to do that till I was reminded recently!
The picture above is straight after I’d had my hair done so you can see it in its full vibrancy.
I’m going to get the toner done first and see how that fairs but I am definitely leaning towards colouring it back and taking a break.
I have been having mine coloured every 6-8 wks since I was 14. The only times m hair has been in very poor condition is after glandular fever and when my psoriasis was very bad.
If you have a good hairdresser who is honest about condition of your hair then it shouldn’t be really damaging it, especially if you have found the best hair products for your hair.
For me personally I can’t beat Aveda Shampure been using it 15 yrs now and have tried other brands and other Aveda products and nothing looks after my hair as well. I found the Aveda products first then moved on to their salons and have to admit their colours are the gentlest I have found on my hair.
I know how hard it is to trust a stylist I have had some hairdressers ruin my hair and my stylist for last 4 yrs is on maternity leave. I was gutted as have had some bad hair days with other stylists in the salon. Funnily enough I am actually liking the one I have at the moment. My normal one is one of the highest up there my new one is a young lassie few levels down (ended up with her when my stylist went home sick) but surprisingly have been really happy with my hair by her and find her really easy to chat too.
What a beautiful shade you have in your hair. Looks gorgeous. I’ve always wanted purple hair and also fuschia. Never tried it. Is there teal hair coloring? Going back to your natural color is nice. You’ll still probably have the reds peaking through. Even natural red hair fades as a person gets older. It is strange that the reds never hold in hair. I used to get mine done in plum or deep auburn. I had so much grey in my hair that in two weeks I needed a touch up. I finally quit coloring it. Good luck which ever shade you go with. Just please post a picture.
Thank you, Lucy. You can’t win either way! But I also realised I have Helen’s wedding three weeks after my appointment and I wouldn’t like to have lilac-ginger highlights poking out for that. The beauty of brown and caramel highlights is they don’t fade or look odd when growing out but with my hair, if I want to go lighter, it has to be done in stages. I also want to try some clip-in hair extensions and feel it will be easier to match to one colour. I imagine she may colour in a semi-permanent shade. No idea of the process involved in dying your hair back to its natural colour. Does anyone know?
Get your colourist and stylist to get your hair to its natural colour at the next appointment. Then you can check out the colourist’s work at the new salon and decide whether you want to risk them doing something different with your hair!
I’ve been every colour known to mankind over the years its hard work to upkeep and damned expensive when you go to a well reknowned salon!
I think you absolutely should go back to your natural shade. I think our own shade is what naturally looks most flattering on any of us. It’s fun to play and I went auburn for a long while but found, as you did, that any red tones are very hard to keep from turning brassy/orange. I went back to my natural medium brown and have never regretted it.
That being said I have to put a shout out in here about my now all time favorite hair color-the Frederic Fekkai permanent color line. Let me say I’ve had my hair colored at the salon (been with same stylist and colorist going on 15 years using both Goldwell and Redken) and the Fekkai color is bar none the BEST I have ever had on my hair. It costs $30 U.S. dollars and is worth every penny. My hair feels absolutely fantastic after the coloring. I cannot say enough about the quality of this color. One caveat: it does tend to run darker than the color tone stated and shown on the box. I use 6N Jaclyn light brown even though I have medium-dark brown hair.
I agree with you, Beth. I do envy those whose hair is light enough to take colours – to be able to switch from blonde to red is something I can’t do but at the same time, my natural hair colour is flattering for me.
