Summer officially began yesterday with the longest day of the year. With the season in full swing it’s all change and I, for one, am glad to wear dresses and sandals and slapping on the SPF. The warm weather also means the hayfever season is at its peak with the dreaded symptoms of runny noses, watery eyes and sneezing affecting 1 in 5 of people in the UK. Hayfever can start at any time, which I personally didn’t realise until my dad developed a mild case of it a few years ago.

About 90% of people with hayfever in the UK are allergic to grass pollen and when levels are at a high, it is unpleasant. If you’re unfortunate to be affected by hayfever, there are steps you can follow to help control your allergy:

  • wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from irritation caused from coming into contact with pollen;
  • use a protective barrier between you and pollen when you are going out by spraying a barrier powder into your nostrils to protect against sneezing and a runny nose.
  • shower before bed to wash off any lingering pollen on you that you might breathe in overnight.

If there’s anyone who understands dealing with hayfever, it’s Boots Pharmaceuticals. Their helpful guide http://www.boots.com/en/Pharmacy-Health/Health-shop/Allergy-hayfever/ explains everything you need to be prepared for, so your summer is not ruined.

To treat hayfever symptoms, your first port of call is to take an anti-histamine as soon as your symptoms start, and keep an eye on the weather forecast when the pollen count is reported. Because various anti-histamines have different ingredients, if one tablet isn’t working for you, consider swapping to another type. Also use a nasal spray which not only treats hayfever symptoms, but if used correctly, prevents too. It’s definitely worth speaking to a Boots pharmacist who will help select the right one for you.

This Wednesday (24th June) something very special is going to take place in London. I’ll be joining Boots Pharmaceuticals in St Christopher’s Place (off Oxford Street) for a unique show. If you happen to be in the area at 8pm, don’t forget to look up to the sky because it will be filled with one million multi-coloured petals raining down. This is because hayfever symptoms are at their worst last thing at night and first thing in the morning, when the pollen moves with the heat of the day – which is why people can be affected by insneezia (night time hayfever caused by pollen falling as the sun sets and the air begins to cool), so sadly it’s not just sticky nights sufferers have to contend with but sleepless ones too.

It’s going to be a spectacular 20 minute multi-coloured display with yours truly helping to release an abundance of petals into the air and here’s the best bit: you can help be a part of it. I would love for you to tweet your support to me between today and until Tuesday morning at 9am (23rd June) with the all important hashtags #PetalDrop and #SummerGoodTimes and my colour, blue, and that colour petal will be included in the petal drop.

That’s not all! One hugely lucky person who follows me and tweets will be given one night’s stay in top London luxury hotel, The Arch, on Wednesday night to make sure they get an amazing night’s sleep in a luxurious double bed and a decedent breakfast fit for a king the next day, with help from Boots Pharmaceuticals if you have hayfever.

If you can’t make it, you can still catch all the action live on Periscope through @BootsUK and I will be reporting on it during and after the event too. I hope you can join me.
