My Orly Collection

If you’ve been reading for a while, you’ll know that I had the hare-brained wheeze a little while ago to swatch all of my polishes by brand. It’s a massive undertaking but it’s really helping me to discover some old favourites, and weed out some polishes that I know I’ll never wear.

So, without further ado, let’s have a gawp at my Orly collection. I love Orly. When they get it right, they get it really right. I love their commitment to the Big-3-free cause, and I’m sure you’ve seen bloggers bang on about their awesome rubberised handles too. When I first started blogging, Orly was barely available in the UK, but thankfully now you can find it with relative ease. Thank goodness!

I thought we’d better start with the two newest ones in my stash, from the gorgeous Holiday Soiree collection. Au Champagne is a beautiful stark white with pearlised shimmer. Ordinarily not something I’d swoon for, but I do really like this. Opaque in two coats.

Oui is also from the same collection. Photos do not do this justice – a lilac foil with a ton of gold shimmer. Utterly gorgeous  – it took three coats and wore like iron, I had this on for a week. Insert jokes about “needing a Oui” here…

Take Him To The Cleaners. What a name! Love this. Deep brown jelly with hidden shimmer. Sadly, very hidden on the day I came to take this photo!

Space Cadet* was huuuuuge a couple of years ago. And reswatching it now, I can see why. It’s a billionochrome!

Rococo-A-G0-Go was recently sent to me as a birthday present by the lovely girls who do the UK PR for Orly. And they couldn’t have chosen a better bottle. Rich, opulent and glowy, and deep purple with gold tones, I love it.

It’s Not Me, It’s You. Haha. A very girly pink creme, this gave me some grief. Super-sheer, it took four coats to resemble anything like opacity. I know loads of you will adore this, but it isn’t a favourite of mine.

Lola gave my camera a real headache! Somewhere between a pink and a coral, this is a hot creme that did take a bit of layering up. Ideal for summer toes, I think.

I reviewed La Vida Loca here in full a while back and re-swatching it here made me realise how much I love it. It only works as a layering polish but adds a hit of hotness to a boring pink creme that you might want to jazz up without all the faff of changing your polish altogether.

Snowcone is probably one of the most difficult polishes I’ve ever had to photograph. It’s far dustier and cornflower like than it appears here. Gorgeous blue creme, opaque in two coats.

Velvet Rope is a glorious purple jelly full of silver glitter, that thankfully doesn’t absorb the purple pigment in application. One coat only, ideal for when seeking a speedy manicure!

Gorgeous is probably my favourite of all my layering polishes. It is so sheer that it would never build up, but it works perfectly to add amazing blue and fuschsia flash to a pink base. Love.

Glitz & Glamour is a very festive yellow-gold foil. Glitz & Glam is about right. Ker-pow!

Razzle*. Hot raspberry jelly veined through with silver shimmer. Really pretty and unique.

Meet Me Under The Mistletoe is hands-down the best festive green polish I have in my collection, from any brand. It’s just utter blue-green sparkly foily perfection that I look forward to wearing every December.

Glitz, not to be confused with Glitz & Glamour above is another foily gold. Orly really do make the best foils, don’t they?

Candy Cane Lane is from last year’s holiday collection too. A pink toned red, I just wish this was more opaque on my visible nail line. Ahh the trouble I have with red jellies.

Plum Noir is something I often pass over when looking for a work appropriate creme but  after swatching it today I think I’m going to spend some time getting to know it better. It’s glossy, flattering and opaque and I really rather like it.

Nite Owl is from Orly’s Autumn Winter Birds of a Feather collection. I swatched this a month or so ago but this picture is so much better. Silver streaked taupe, and very pretty indeed.

Sweet Peacock was the sell-out of the Birds of a Feather collection. A crazily bright blue foil, this never fails to gain compliments.

I tried for a long time to get hold of the now s0ld-out Bubbly Bombshell*, which was a Summer 2011 release. Beautiful fuschia glitter, which is kind of odd in that it dries matte. I wore this on my toes for about three months this year. You see it here as nature intended (well, layered over a red), but I prefer it with a good dollop of topcoat.

Coco Beach is a kind of strange, mid-brown, very warm shade. Reminiscent of Leighton Denny’s Chocoholic, or OPI’s Chocolate Moose. It has too much red in it for me to wear this regularly.

Bon Bon is the one outright fail in my collection. A greyed out lavender, it has so much promise, but the formula in the bottle I had was water-thin and needed about 10 coats to get anywhere near opacity. As a result, a great amount of emergency Seche Vite was needed to dry it, causing the tips to shrink back and go bald after a couple of hours. Avoid.

Monroe’s Red is the red creme I usually opt to wear at Christmas. The reason being that it wears like iron and I can usually get a good week out of it once I’ve applied a red glitter over the top.

Emberstone was my first ever embargoed product. This is a recent release from Orly’s Mineral FX range. It’s a striking orange foil which flashes pink and red depending on the light. Utterly beautiful but sadly not one I can keep on for longer than a couple of days as it is a bit chippy.

So there we have it. What do you think? Do you have any favourites here? Or any other recommendations for me?

Helen

  1. Oh god, What a post. I love it. Never tried Orly before but after seeing these I will definitely give it a whirl, I LOVE Space Cadet. Really into the duo and Billion chromes 🙂

Goes back for second look on computer

    BF

  2. Oh how I wish I had not opened this, I am between awe and complete seething jealousy haha
I love Velvet Rope, it always makes me think of Cadbury’s! I want so many of the shades here!

  3. O_O You took on quite a project, but I love seeing all of these! Orly has grown to be a favorite brand of mine over the years – I know I’ll be an odd man out when I say this but I actually like them better now than OPI, although I’m super excited for the spring collection, best one I’ve seen in a year! Okay, getting off topic. Anyway, you have a wonderful collection of these!

  4. So many beautiful polishes! There are a few that I definitely have to get. Space Cadet & Snowcone are favorites of mine. I have to get Emberstone & Bubbly Bombshell.

  5. I don’t own any Orly polishes and was eyeing up “Lola” the other day but it looks too bright for me from your swatch. I do like the look of “It’s not me, it’s you” but I think I may get annoyed with how sheer it is….x

  6. We seem to have a similar taste in Orly polishes! I think my collection of Orlys is pretty much the same 🙂 except for snowcone, I gave it away, because I had such difficulties applying it properly & the drying time was horrifying for me. looks much better on you than on me 😀
