Musings on 2011

It’s been a funny old year, 2011. I’ve been through the stress of concurrently buying and selling a house (never again), and Sheenie has had a few ups and downs health-wise, as some of you know. It’s not been a bad year by an stretch of the imagination, but it has been a bit, well, exhausting.

Blogging seems to have changed beyond compare during this past year. When we started Just Nice Things, there were a few bloggers all doing their thing at the same time and we naturally gravitated together. All of a sudden, the scene has just exploded and there are now more beauty blogs out there than I’ve had hot dinners (hard to believe, but true). Whilst Sheenie and I do our best to stay out of politics and drama, there’s been something of a pendulum swing away from bloggers, with the advent of grabbers, “blaggaz” and thus a increasingly negative perception from a number of journalists and make-up artists, plus some PR companies who no longer know for sure who they should be working with.

One thing that will be changing next year is the Google Friend Connect box (on the right of the page at the top). Google has decided that this little piece of kit is to be used by blogs using their Blogger software, and will be removing it from all WordPress blogs (like this one) in the early part of 2012. We are hoping that WordPress will come up with a solution, but in the event that they don’t, please, please can you register for our RSS feed, or copy and paste our URL into your Google reader so that you can keep up with all of the Just Nice Things news that way. We are investigating email alerts for people who might want to subscribe that way as well – more news as and when we have it.

It’s hard to believe, but 2012 will be Just Nice Things’ third anniversary. Sheenie and I are amazed that the blog has taken off so well and that we have a great group of readers. We have a mega giveaway planned for the anniversary in February, so keep an eye out for that one. And in the meantime, I can certainly promise more of the same. Shed loads of nail varnish, still my first love. Probably some Nars (who am I kidding? Lots of Nars). Hopefully a few more videos from Sheenie. And other nice things – stay tuned!

So, thank you for sticking with us in 2011.  I am keen to see what 2012 will bring. I am hoping it will be more of a straightforward year, which will hopefully bring some health, wealth and happiness – not just for Sheenie and I but for all our friends and families, and of course, our readers as well.

We hope you’ve had a good year, and wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful 2012.

Helen & Sheenie

PS – I’ve just found out that this post that I did about my winter make-up look did indeed win the competition that Japonesque were running! Hurrah! A box of brushes and make-up essentials is currently winging its way aross the Atlantic  to me – what a fantastic way to start 2012.

  1. Hi Helen and Sheenie

Have only just come across your blog after following Helen on Twitter…. I really love it! keep wasting time reading your posts! naughty naughty!

Well done on 2011 and all the best for 2012

    xx

  2. Happy New Year to you both, it’s lovely that while some of the “old bunch” have gone MIA, you both are still here, day to day. It’s hard to keep up sometimes with all the new bloggers around!
I wonder if you’ve considered Bloglovin’ – that’s how I’ve gone about following a lot of folks that I can’t follow with GFC once they go by the wayside. I really wish they wouldn’t do that.
    Have a fantastic holiday!

  3. Have a very Happy New Year & especially good health for the New Year for the both of you. Things have changed so much this past year. There have been quite a few people not blogging much if at all. I hate that they are ladies that are good writers and are interesting to read. I’m not looking to add anyone new to my list that I read. I guess I’m getting few up also. It seems like some blogs just keep spitting out the same old things. You can find the same collections done over & over again. I don’t just like to read, I like to comment & participate. It’s frustrating when I don’t even get a hello. I know from what I’ve read how hard it is to write a blog. Plus you have a lot to do with uploading & all that I don’t know how to do. It’s just nice to know someone is reading what you write & responding.

  4. Hi, as Nicole suggested, Bloglovin.com is your answer. It is how I currently follow your blog. Which I love and rate as the best UK blog.
