This is one from the vault! I keep finding polishes that I have worn, photographed, and not blogged about yet. I think moving to every-other-day postings this year has done me the power of good as it means that I have a great backlog of stuff to bring you, although perhaps not in real time, as I
recall that I wore Boosh before Christmas.
What can I say? It’s black. It applies beautifully. Of course it does – it’s Illamasqua! There are a lot of black shades out there as it’s a fairly standard, every home should have one, type polish. Black is useful as a base for glitter or nail art, and occasionally if you’re feeling really vampy, wearing alone.
I don’t often wear black polish just by itself, preferring the darker green or aubergine shades, but if I were to do so, this is the one I’d reach for. I had a 2True black that was a fraction of the price but gave me bald spots, and a Barry M one that looked more navy, plus was desperately thin. So on balance, once again, the Illamasqua wins, thanks to the amazingly glossy formula, easy application and the longevity of wear.
Although it’a £13 per bottle, this is one coat. So you get countless applications from it – I can see this bottle lasting me a really long time.

And as a side note, although I’ve never got to grips with The Mighty Boosh, I am a fan of Neol Fielding. I like his clothes and he is the only appropriate replacement for Bill Bailey’s vacant seat on Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
So what are your thoughts? Do you wear black nail varnish? Or are you over it? Is there a place for it? Let me know your thoughts…..
Helen
I’m a goth, so am pretty much obliged by all conventions to own a bottle of black nail varnish! I have the Barry M one purely because it is usually my favourite brand and I bought it when I didn’t have much time to shop around. Having said that, I pretty much never wear it on its own – the look that seems to work best involves layering it over one of the dark reds and then putting red glitter over the top.
Love the Mighty Boosh, although took a while to get into it, the first 3 or 4 times you’re thinking ‘what is this crap?’!
Haven’t ever worn black alone except for fancy dress, I think I only own Black Taxi from Nails Inc. A one coat black is pretty amazing though..
I need a good staple black, so I think I will pick this one up after the summer. And I love The Mighty Boosh!
A very helpful review, thanks.
I love black polish! I think I prefer matte to shiney though, but they both have their place! And its one of the few colours that looks as good on short rubbish nails as it does on long beautiful ones, and you can get away with it being a bit chipped!
I also love The Boosh and think Noel Fielding is a god amongst men!
I have Lancome Piha Black which has subtle glass fleck. I don’t wear any colour as a full mani ever. LH and RH are always different. So I do wear black.
I have Misa Wishing on a Star too which is more dark charcoal with silver fleck.
You have to make it edgy! Boosh isn’t doing it for me, I’m afraid.
Love black polish but haven’t worn it much. I love a deep navy blue on me. Don’t know who the two guys are. Must be foot ballers?
Hi Helen!!
Isn’t Boosh the greatest black ever??? I love it and to me it worths its money! Looks lovely on you!
[…] My only criticism is that this is a slightly brown toned black. I’ve heard others mention that their versions of this lean towards the navy blue side. This doesn’t, but I have to say that it does lack the pure jet black quality and impact of Illamasqua Boosh. […]
[…] as a layering polish. Here you see Curry Up Don’t Be Late as a topcoat finish over Illamasqua Boosh. I love how it looks – like a bright yet burnished antique gold. So […]
I looove black nail polish. A must have staple in everyones collection I believe!
