I’m feeling quite delirious as I type this. Why? I had a Brazilian wax for the first time and my state of consciousness has switched from feeling euphoric to bordering on dizziness.
But I also feel extremely relieved and happy because A) I conquered my fears, B) I overcame the embarrassment and C) I won’t have to go through with it for another 4 weeks.
When I walked into the treatment room, I had the unexpected shock of the therapist being old enough to my mum. Worse was that she was from the same ethnic minority group as myself. Cue the shame and embarrassment of taking your knickers off in front of aunty-ji! But when she asked me to remove my underwear, popped the lamp on and put on her specs to examine me like she was a gynaecologist, I wanted to die!
I kept telling myself she does this sort of thing all the time so she won’t flinch and she thankfully mentioned this but the truth is, she hasn’t seen mine (well obviously she has now). Once the embarrassment had subsided I had moved onto feeling tense, which she picked up on straight away as I just couldn’t relax my legs! I honestly didn’t know what to expect other than what I knew would be coming off. I tried to keep talking so it would take my mind off it and half way through the ordeal I was running out of things to ask.
I couldn’t see what was going on (just as well), I just felt the hot wax being applied which began to sting a little over the areas that had been freshly waxed. When she told me “the worst was yet to come”, I was on the verge of screaming. Could there be any more pain? Actually, no. The closer she waxed, the less I felt and all because she ripped it off quickly.
After 15 minutes, it was over and it was a perfectly performed procedure. “You were very good!”, she remarked before she applied some soothing lotion as opposed to a gold star. I think she meant I didn’t cry.
In a quarter of an hour, I had made this lady my friend and minutes later, I had booked another appointment with her. Much to my relief, she was kind and gentle too, and put my mind at ease. I also realised that I had endured the worst pain possible in waxing so from here forth I knew it would become less painful not to mention the growth would slow down and become finer. Something else which filled me with more confidence was the fact she admitted to having worked in this salon for 18 years. There you go – she’s seen EVERYTHING.
I was advised to avoid a hot shower tonight and to bathe in lukewarm water the next day. Swimming should be left for a couple of days the chlorine may cause irritation.
Waxing is expensive if you get everything done from head to toe but there are some things you should leave a professional to handle so £26 on a Brazilian wax every month is a small price to pay, not to mention it takes only 15 minutes. If you’re unsure of going all the way, then I would suggest you start off with a bikini wax or if you’re prepared to throw caution to the wind, then go for the whole shebang. Finally seek some recommendations from others so you pick a trusted and reputable salon and not stumble into a dingy place with an angry woman because she can do it for a fiver (and skin you alive in the process).
So why did I have it done? Shaving doesn’t agree with me and I can’t wax ‘down below’, I swim regularly and it’s hygienic. Sorry, that last bit sounds clinical but it’s a valid reason. I know some of you will be crossing your legs in pretence agony but as they say, ‘no pain, no gain’. Now please don’t remind me I’ve divulged such an intimate secret with you.
LOL!…well done….Next time I dare you to go alllll the way…..I need to go to your lady…
The Thrill of Brazil eh? Well done you and doubly well done for sharing!
All the way? I’m pretty much bare. Not keen on the Hollywood but I could handle one last strip. I reckon this is one notch below child birth. Swim was lovely, by the way. Helen, are you thinking about it…? 😉
“One notch below childbirth”? No, I’m not thinking about it! I was reading somewhere recently that it’s all the rage in the USA to have a Hollywood and then be garnished with diamante studs. I’m far too conservative!
I would stop short of diamantes or having shapes designed. I think she offered to do that next time! Wouldn’t all those bits and pieces just get in the way or drop off?
Get in the way of what? ;0)
Sensitive soul that I am, I’d be nervous of putting glue near such a delicate, recently traumatised area and getting a dermatitis reaction.
Swimming! Honestly…and you say you’re conservative! It’s understandable if you have sensitive skin and/or prone to reactions. If other methods work for you, lucky. Unfortunately not for me, not with my skin pigmentation.
P.S: Nine days on and still smooth!
Oh – My- Goodness….. ha ha ha …… what a funny-lovely blog post!
I think your blog is well written and happy to see all your “In Praise Of” recommendations, although here in Canada, we can’t get some of that stuff directly in our stores, but we can order some of it…. but it with lots of shipping/postage { $$$ }
I Luv seeing different products available all around the world, with an honest in depth review from someone who uses it and not just a mag or company pushing it…….!
Keep up all your good work and I am looking forward to seeing all those Barry M’s I drool over in the bottle – but rarely see swatched!
Hi Deez,
I was looking on your blog for some way to contact you to let you know we’d linked to you and hoped it was ok! I love your blog too :0)
Thankyou so much for your lovely feedback – it’s nice to know people out there are enjoying what we are doing.
Seeing products from around the world is very cool but then it makes me sad when I see something I like that I can’t get hold of – one word, Yokohamas! Let me know if there’s anything you’d be up for swapping and I’ll see what can be arranged!
Thanks, Deez! It’s one of those things lots of women wonder about but are too scared to try or even ask. 🙂 We really appreciate your supportive words; it’s what motivates us even more.
