A little throwback to holo week for you today. I’ve been meaning to try out this China Glaze holo top coat for a while now, and I thought that Ciaté Skinny Jeans I was wearing the other day looked like the perfect contender.
I had high hopes for this top coat. Fancy being able to holo up any polish of your choice!
It didn’t exactly live up to my expectations. But then they were high. What we have here is a lovely, smooth topcoat with shimmery particles.
It is very pretty though. This is two coats, and I think it would only get better with three.
I like the way it zings up the base colour and makes it look more sparkly and bright. In fact, I think this was the perfect polish to choose to demonstrate this as it has created a look that is totally different to any other polish that I own. Win!
Here’s the close-up. As you can see, the particles are more evenly spaced than your average holo, and it is predominantly silver. Very delicate and pretty though.
By way of comparison, I decided to try Nixxy‘s suggestion of a veeerrry thin layer of silver holo polish as a topcoat. Hurrah!
I’ve finally found a use for my OPI Standing Room Only Silver holo that I struggled with so badly to get to any state of opacity.
Look how pretty it looks. Utterly blingtastic. This is far, far flashier than the China Glaze topcoat, as you can see.
In actual fact, I like both looks. I think a layer of silver holo topcoat is great to bling up a polish and make it utterly pingy and holo-fied, with a multi-coloured shimmer. The China Glaze comes in when you want something more subtle and glittery, and mainly silver.
So there you go. What are your thoughts? Do you prefer one over the other? Does anyone else like to holo up their polishes? I think it might be the start of a new addiction – stay tuned as I cannot wait to try making a holo OPI You Don’t Know Jacques!

Both look great – but I think I prefer the second one 😉
I’m the opposite of Nixxy I prefer the top but that’s probably because I favour darker shades (and I love my opaques rather than bling!)
Love a bit of experimenting though!
Thanks for showing us that. I’ve wondered about it and now that I’ve seen it, I rather like it 🙂 I’ve used some of my holos as you did with the OPI over a base color and been pleased with it.
Well I like both looks! Watch yourself driving and don’t keep looking at those gorgeous nails. I’ve never tried it like you have. Guess I need to do it. But then again I have so so many new ones to try. I got in my order from Diamond Cosmetics and wow! So many gorgeous colors. I’m wearing Party Hardy or I think that’s it. It looks like gold paint from a model car kit. This is the third day and it still look fantastic. Your nails would look beautiful in this color.
Ooooooooooh, sparkly. *G*
THEY CAME! THEY CAME IN THE MAIL TODAY! I didn’t have to hunt down my mailman and shake him until his teeth rattled or *anything*. 🙂
So beautiful – my hands are tremoring right now but as soon as they calm down, I’m going to try each one on a different finger.
Thank you!
I’ve been dying to see the china glaze topcoat! I like them both actually, but you have to admit the OPI is really packin a punch.
You know I’m on board…lol! I liked both. Honestly, some days I might want something more bling-y. And other days I want a more subtle sparkly. It’s all good to me…lol! Bling here, bling there, bling everywhere!
I love it, it looks really good with the blue base color.
I thought you might! 🙂
I’m getting quite into experimenting at the moment. I like both looks but probably for different occasions.
I didn’t think the holo would work as well as it did. Very pleased as I’d given that OPI up as a bad job.
Ooh Lucy I was just on the Diamond website and I saw Party Hardy – it’s gorgeous!
Yayyyyy! How are they looking? Have you tried them out yet? SO relieved and glad the parcel arrived safely.
Kae, I know. Sorry to have taken so long to get on to it.
Velvet, either which way they are definitely bringing on the bling!
Thanks Brooke. Good to see you again!
Are you kidding? Of COURSE I’ve tried them all. 🙂
I love Essie’s application – so smooth and lovely. All of the colours look amazing on me, except Rock Star Skinny – so I’m regifting that one to a girlfriend of mine who has been drooling over it ever since I won your contest.
I think Huckle Buckle is probably my favorite, because I can see it being a ‘wear it every day’ type color for me. Sexy Divide and Damsel in this Dress are more ‘night out’ fancy, but OMG are they gorgeous.
Thank you so much again.
