Aside from the pre-clean up shots, isn’t this amazing?
Barry M’s Red Glitter is known as the budget version of China Glaze’s Ruby Pumps for a reason. This is £2.98, whereas I paid around £8.00 for the China Glaze.
The main difference between the two (and excuse me for sounding obvious) is that the Barry M is a coarse, grainy red and orange particle glitter, whereas the China Glaze is a smoother, more glass flecked jelly. Ruby Pumps was a breeze to remove, whereas Red Glitter took…erm…longer.
I am playing with a lot of glitters at the moment and

rapidly drawing the conclusion that there is zero point trying to build one of these up from scratch on a naked nail. FAR better to take a corresponding shade and paint the glitter over the top. It’s easier to remove and uses less of your precious glitter polish that way.
This was two coats over a dark red jelly. It is very dense and thick, and spreads beautifully. Dries really fast too, but you need a good gloopy topcoat to lay on top, to eliminate that gritty, sandpaper feel.

Do you need them both? Not really. Red Glitter isn’t a dupe for Ruby Pumps but in a time of recession, it’s close enough.
Of course, it’s nice to have both. I like the way that the China Glaze looks three dimensional with the glass flecked depth. But I like the crazy orange-toned bling and bejewelled-ness of the Barry M.
Who’d have thought it eh- me raving about red glitter. It must be the time of year as I can’t get enough of these and wore them each for a good few days.
There’s no denying that the Barry M is the gaudier of the pair. But what the heck? It’s nearly Christmas – what more excuse do you need? Perfect for that party pedicure or all-out blingy fingers!
I don’t have any Barry M but this looks really nice. I love Ruby Pumps though, it’s one of my faourites. You can get it cheaper than £8, so it’s definitely worth looking around for. I think mine was from Sally’s.
I love this one! Try it over different shades of red polish. A top coat, especially BM’s own, can smooth out the grainyness. If you want a smoother one generally, 17 Ruby Dazzle was what I meant when I said I had the budget version of Ruby Pumps.
Oh, and I’m doing a red sparkly post later, although not either of those!
Today I’ve got some Ruby Pumps over Lubu (1 coat each) and then other nails are Lubu over Ruby. Ruby over Lubu works better (brighter anyway). Then I have put Gosh Rainbow over 3 nails to get flakies. I love flakies. They are my new best thing.
I love glitters but Pumps is the easiest by far to remove and that is important to me.
Glitterific! They both look fab on you. I have ’em both in my untrieds, time to dig them out for Christmas, even on my stumpies.
They are both great! I think I’ll give the Barry M a go, I bought the green glitter recently to layer over another green for a sparkly Christmassy look.
What beautiful glittery nails. I love both versions on you. Terrific idea to apply the glitter over the same shade. Much easier to take off is good. I wore a China Glaze polish that had the really big glitter. It took a good hour and a half to take it off. I used acetone and a clean cotton ball for each nail. I don’t think that’s a polish I’ll wear frequently. I really don’t mind taking off the glitter. It worth it for the gorgeous sparkle.
Very festive!!! The Barry M looks better but I am sure the China Glaze would perform better….very nice!
I am just loving the China Glaze I have 3 coats of just the china glaze on and think it looks fabulous.
8 pounds for China Glaze ouch!!! In Canada we have Sally Beauty where they sell China Glaze for 1 pound (equivalent). Now if only we had Barry M.
Love your blogspot, you ladies are fun, check out my blog.
Cheers, Ann
Nothing is more festive than a gaudy red glitter. My inner drag queen approves. From your pictures, I may even prefer it to Ruby Pumps. Is that blasphemy in the nail world? Both reds are beautiful on you!
Yes I know now you can get it in cheaper places but it took me a while to find where!
Ooh I shall go and take a look at that. I might well try it over darker colours but the Barry M is quite opaque as it is.
That is some awesome layering! Hope you managed to take it off ok! I’d love to see that though – I nede the GOSH Rainbow. Next purchase!
Definitely – now is the time to get these out!
I think I have the green glitter but I’m not 100% sure – need to check the stash.
Thanks Lucy – I am trying to work with thinner coats as there arent enough hours in the day to be messing about with glitter reoval. Although I did watch Kelly from VV’s video on how to remove glitter polish and that raelly helped.
Lots of Barry M fans in the house – I thought everyone would prefer the China Glaze.
Glad you like it 🙂
Hi Ann and thankyou – I will definitely check out your blog 🙂
I don’t think it’s blasphemy! Well – if it is, I won’t tell anyone. It is proper cabaret glitz, isnt it? Wait til you see the other Barry M glitters!
[…] just three shades dabbed onto a gold basecoat. The glitters I used were Misa Disco Queen, Barry M Red Glitter and the as yet unblogged about Barry M Green Glitter. I just mixed them up on the nail in a […]
[…] just thought it was nice but not a million worlds away from polishes like the far cheaper Barry M Red Glitter (yuck, my nails were way too long in those days). But somehow, get Untold over a layer of […]
