It’s a known fact that the older we get, the less collagen we naturally produce – you know, the elasticated stuff that keeps our skin looking buoyantly supple and youthful looking. Sorbet, a chain of family-run salons in north London (of which one happens to be on my doorstep), offers a new kind of treatment called the Venus Freeze (it goes aptly with the salon’s name, doesn’t it?) It’s a non-surgical and non-invasive procedure which harnesses the power of radio frequency technology to boost or ‘wake up’ collagen by heating the deeper layer of tissue under the skin. The treatment works to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, tighten sagging skin and restore a refreshed, younger looking appearance.
So how does this device work (which looks like a laser hair removal machine)? It uses a combination of multi-polar radio frequency and pulsed electro-magnet fields. The two technologies work in unison to safely and comfortably heat the tissue under the surface of the skin, which encourages the body to produce more collagen and elastin fibres so contrary to its name, there is nothing cold or freezing about this treatment but it ‘freezes’ the visible signs of ageing. Radio frequency is proven to be safe and effective for all skin complexions, including darker skin tones so that’s great news for anyone who has sensitive skin or runs the risk of reacting badly to skincare products particularly those who suffer from psoriasis

Making myself comfortable beneath the towels, the beauty therapist got to work on my face. The sensation was warm and relaxing, and lasted about 40 minutes so it’s possible to fit this in your lunch hour and return to work without any downtime. After my treatment was complete, my skin looked rejuvenated but I would say that for profound results to show, multiple visits are required. In this case, it is recommended to have 6 to 8 treatments, a week apart so the Venus Freeze requires commitment in time and cost, more so than the average facial. If there is an important event coming up like a wedding, then this is something I would invest in in the run-up to the big day. The difference is the Venus Freeze goes beyond the surface of the skin whereas a facial polishes the surface and has instant, short-term results.
A single treatment costs £40 and a course is £192, and it’s not just the face that can be treated but the eyes, neck, arms, knees, stomach and buttocks (so you can have a kind of Brazilian bum lift unless you’re a Kardashian, in which case the method is more extreme). Due to the nature of the treatment, the Venus Freeze is not recommended for pregnant women or cancer patients for example and the salon will carry out a medical check beforehand as part of a consultation.

UPDATE: Sadly Sorbet Salons has ceased trading in the UK in 2019.
