Shopping for bits and pieces for the home has reached an exciting new level lately. More retailers are offering a superior selection of accessories and really working hard to feed inspiration for home styling.
Meanwhile I’m slowly working my way around the house to alter or completely revamp rooms and in my quest, I’ve struck gold at some at finding fantastic yet affordable home accessories, ornaments and other knick-knacks to add the finishing touch to my humble abode.
If you’re thinking about embarking on a DIY mission or just feel like jazzing up a tired looking corner of the room, here’s my Top 10 shops to go to (in no particular order by the way):
  1. Primark
Daaaaymn, forget the clothes!  Every season this place tempts me to hand over my credit card. Primark is totally slamming it with throws, duvet covers and home accessories at budget-friendly prices and it’s on point with trends. I think the best thing they’ve done so far are the carnival-esque lights like this metallic star.

I’m also a fan of the bedding throws and the quality of their duvet sets have improved massively. Primark’s towels are also impressive and I recommend their slightly pricier ones as they are softer and thicker in comparison to their basic ones.

  2. George at Asda
Wandering around Asda on my lunch break is a distraction especially when the entrance I take leads straight to the homeware section but they do some superb ornaments and often have reductions. One of my favourite finds was a Pack of Cards giant vase that I’d had my eye on for a while before I grabbed it at half-price:

I also picked up these lights in silver and bronze last Christmas for £8-10 (I can’t remember exactly how much). Don’t discount George – there are some absolute steals here.

  3. Tesco
Tesco is a good source for smelly stuff so do have a sniff at their scented candles and reeds. My current favourite is the Citrus Fruit & Ginger collection which comprises of scented tealights, tin candles and diffusers and ranges from £4 to £8. There are also some cute candle holders like this baby blue tealight holder (under £2, I think):

  4. Matalan
Matalan’s home section is in a different league compared to the rest of their merchandise although some things are questionably overpriced. Still, it’s worth popping in as you never know what you might find. There are some lovely cushions and candle holders. My favourite is the letter cushions at £8 each. By the way look out for discount offers at Matalan which are often 20% off.
  5. TK Maxx
I have to trek far for a decent TK Maxx that stocks homeware as my nearest one is pretty crap. When I do, I like to raid the kitchen section and with well-known brands on sale at discounted prices, the temptation is hard to resist. TK Maxx is also good for other homely things like stylish looking laundry baskets, waste paper bins and storage solutions. The best one I’ve visited is in Reading although I hear Manchester has a corker.
  6. Homebase
Homebase has some excellent merchandise although like Matalan, the prices aren’t always a bargain when Primark sell similar items for less. Their duvet sets are of a sterling quality though and it’s always worth checking for sales and seasonal reductions.
  7. Debenhams
I’d place Debenhams in the mid-range category as they have some swish and swanky products, partly down to their collaborations with designers but their kitchen and dining selection are charming. Look out for discount offers which are very handy if you’re looking for pillows and bedding. I recently bought a pair of pillows (normally £40 each) for under £20 on a discount promotion Debenhams were running for one day. Now I want more of those pillows but they’ve gone up to full price!
  8. BHS
I love BHS! Firstly their fitted bed sheets and pillow cases (in every colour under the sun) are of superb quality and secondly they always have blue cross sales so I have bought some beautiful duvet sets for a fraction of the price. I like popping into the Watford branch as their homeware section is always fully stocked especially for the bathroom and bedroom. Remember my Small Glass Bird Jar for my cotton pads? That was from BHS.

  9. H&M
H&M is new on the horizon of home accessories and there are a few pieces that bring out the magpie in me. You know, shiny things. My nearest H&M sadly doesn’t have a homeware section so I have to go to Oxford Street but it’s a place you might like to explore for the odd trinket.
  10. IKEA
I could not leave out IKEA! After all they’re the ones that kicked off the obsession from bloggers with their flat-packed furniture (of which I vowed never to buy into but succumbed). IKEA covers everything across the board be it candles, holders, mirrors or vases. It’s just going there that requires a plan of action and strategic timing (try to go late evening before it shuts at 10pm. Bear in mind there will be a few parents who think IKEA is suitable place to let their kids run riot when they should be in bed at that hour.)
And finally, not forgetting…

Wilko’s, Zara Home, M&S, Sainsbury’s, Tiger and HEMA. You’ll also find something worthwhile at one, if not all, of these stores. Let me know if you’ve found anything brilliant at any of these shops or is there somewhere I’ve not thought about trying.
