Rimmel – Jungle Princess

I haven’t been near a Rimmel product for over ten years. I used to use their liquid liner every day without fail until one day  my skin took a massive disliking to it and rejected it. Literally overnight, my eyelids started peeling and I looked like I was wearing bright red eyeliner. Nice.

So, understandably, I’d not really been encouraged to buy anything from Rimmel since. If getting the London Look means looking like a creature of the night, then I was happy to pass. Until this weekend, when I was ambling down the aisles of Boots and this polish caught my eye.

I’m a  bit confused by this. It looks pink in the bottle. Well – a kind of rose gold. But on the nail, it’s unmistakeably brown. Very strange.

Also, this was hell to apply. Look – the bottle promises “mistake free application”. Well, can I sue? For someone who has applied nail varnish for approximately 360 out of the last 365 days, I’ve got pretty good at it. But this was one of the most difficult polishes I have ever worked with. The brush is stubby and inflexible. It isn’t dense enough to pick up enough polish. It dragged and dragged.

And I got bubbles. Lots and lots of bubbles, resulting in me adding more coats to try and smooth it out. Humph. I’m really not impressed. Also I had to do so much clean-up here that I swear more polish wound up on my fingers than on the nail. Not the mistake free application I was promised.

But….the colour is outstanding. I love it. It may be browner than I was expecting, but as a brown lover, I don’t have an issue with that. It also contains gorgeous pink shimmer – not always obvious, kind of like a Paradoxal hidden shimmer, but still enough to prevent it from looking like just another flat brown creme.  I think it is sooo pretty and I really don’t own anything else like it. It reminds me a little bit of OPI’s Im Fondue Of You, only slightly pinker, perhaps.

So. On balance, I would wear this again. The colour is so lovely that it is worth the hellish application.

What do you think? Do you own any of these Rimmel Lycra Pro polishes? And can any of you testify that it really does last for up to ten days?

  1. I really like the look of this colour. I do own a couple of the lycra polishes, but I’ve never found a colour I was happy to keep on for 10 days so I cannot comment on their longevity! xx

  2. Hmmmm, usually I think Rimmel polishes are actually really good. I own quite a few of their polishes and I’ve never had a problem with any of them. Usually they glide on like butter…at least they do on me. 🙂 And they are one of the brands that chip the least on my nails.

  3. I have a few Rimmel polishes they are my bargain basement polishes as I tend to buy them when I’m having a very bad day at work and I’ve escaped to the nearby supermarket for a bottle of water and a sarnie! I have to say I have never had a problem with application with any of them and the pro brush is great! I have a bluey one, a fabulous red and a gorgeous deep purple shade. They go on smoothly and slickly and 2 coats are perfect! Perhaps you have a dodgy bottle I’d try another one for good measure!

  4. I’m afraid the term ‘brown lover’ conjures up memories of a cocktail my friend’s housemate once made, inspired by a certain subset of porn! 😛

  5. Sure doesn’t look like the shade in the bottle! I like it. Love the flash of different colors in it. I have some Rimmel polishes but not the Lycra brand.
