Last weekend I made the journey from the north of London to the south to the county of Surrey for LondonCat’s Cat Extravaganza. The 3-day international event took place between 10-12 January in the beautiful surroundings of Sandown Park racing ground in Esher.

It was my first time going to a cat show and I was beyond intrigued and excited. I suppose it was the equivalent of Crufts. Upon entering the hall, my senses took me to the middle where dozens of cat owners had brought their exquisite felines to be pawed at and adored. I’m a proud cat mum yet my kitty ovaries were exploding at the sight of the cats I clapped eyes on and I wanted them all: a stylish Sphynx with the biggest and greenest eyes, numerous Bengals, British Shorthairs, a remarkable new breed called Lykoi (werewolf cat), giant Maine Coons…there were some absolute rare breeds present and all were being preened and pampered ahead of the judging competition amongst a total of 200 cats.

Anyone can enter their cat into the show although I would be seriously nervous about my cat. Owners were casually walking around the hall, holding their cats with one hand. In fact, every cat I saw was so chilled and relaxed whereas my cat would panic and hide in a corner. He can’t even stay still in my arms! People were polite and respectful (I can tell you it was really hard to resist petting them or wanting to cuddle these cats).

The biggest attraction was the appearance of James Bowen and A Streetcat Named Bob, signing their bestselling books. The queue for Bob and James stretched across the entire hall although I was lucky to see them pass me. (If you haven’t seen the film, I recommend you do – it highlights some serious issues, but it will warm your heart.)

The queue to meet Bob and James

My absolute favourite was this fella – a fluffy white cloud who didn’t mind being teased with a comb. Mind you, I also fell in love with this grumpy looking ginger and this giant bigger than the average dog, but with the most distinctive ears I’ve ever seen.

I would have liked there to have been more vendors catering for cats (and not paint balling for humans). I feel the UK is so behind in marketing and merchandising for cats unlike America. The pet section for cats in stores here is terribly poor. There really is a thirst to spoil our fur babies and cat lovers are prepared to spend.

I left with the words of one cat owner from the show embedded in my mind: “I have 16 cats…”, she said. I hear you, sister. That’ll be me when I retire.

If you missed out on this Cat Extravaganza, don’t panic for the show is returning in April and will be taking place in London on 18-19 April (venue to be announced soon). For more information, visit https://www.londoncats.org.uk/london.

*I was invited to this event, however all words and opinions are my own.
