Primark is soaring with its beauty range of make-up and accessories and one that’s caught my attention is its blender sponges because it’s been alleged by make-up artist Wayne Goss that these are as good as the Beautyblender.
When I was in Primark recently, I spotted these sponges and dropped a bag in my basket. The packet contains one neon yellow miniature softly pointed sponge, two large peach sponges and one large size in hot pink for the grand price of £2.50. The colours are uncannily similar to Beautyblender (hmm) except for the peach but the latex-free material they’re made of is nowhere close to Beautyblender.
First up is the hot pink blender. I soaked the sponge, squeezed out the excess and loaded it up with some liquid foundation. And straight away I hated it. It’s stiff as anything with no flexibility, making it difficult to use. It’s the toughest sponge I’ve come across and I really did not enjoy using it one bit. A soft, squeezy sponge bounces off the skin as it dabs product, leaving a smooth and flawless finish. Primark’s equivalent of the Beautyblender also definitely absorbs more product. After one use, I wanted to throw it in the bin.
Bizarrely the other blending sponges are nothing like the large one – in fact they’re pretty good. Soft and squeezable, they inflate quickly when coming into contact with water but not on the same scale as the Beautyblender which almost doubles. To use they were perfectly fine and easy, but like their big pink sister, I do suspect they absorb more product. I also found them harder to clean.
If you’re thinking about investing in a Beautyblender but aren’t sure how you will get on with make-up sponges, you could have practice run with these but avoid the large pink one. Personally I can’t be torn away from the Beautyblender…
