When Helen reviewed Mint Candy Apple, I was eager to get my hands on it. Well my nearest branch of Fenwicks was sold out but I found this in the unlikely place of a local chemist. Result! So I present Orly’s Gumdrop versus Essie’s Mint Candy Apple.

Gumdrop is another pastel shade from their Sweet collection – a teal like shade that is almost identical of Essie’s Mint Candy Apple, which of course has famously been compared to the much sought-after Chanel’s Jade.
Orly is very thick in consistency whereas Essie is the opposite yet both produce impressive results, with the latter being slightly lighter and greener in tone. I found both easy to apply especially Orly (though Lemonade was quite tricky). I love how thick the cremes are, which reflect the quality you’re paying for.
Colour wise, there is a distinct difference (although you can’t tell from the bottles) and it’s a matter of personal choice or if you’re greedy like me, you love both.
Gumdrop is much darker with blue undertones whereas Mint Candy Apple is, well, like a mint shade – kind of reminscent of mint coloured toothpaste.
I know everyone has jumped on the pastels bandwagon but I am not sick and tired of it yet. Let’s face it, like everyone, I am waiting for the sunshine and these kind of colours put me in an optimistic mood. Which one of these two are you leaning more towards or can you not make up your mind?
Orly nail polishes are available to buy from UK stockists www.cupidandgrace.com, priced at £8.75.
Good thing I don’t do your job as I can’t see any difference between them! Nice but not nice/unusual enough for me to open my wallet. The Orly bottle is prettier and I don’t have any Orly so I’d go for that. It also has a better name IMO.
Hi,
I love the pastel colours, I do find that they show up any little mistakes though. Why don’t you check out Orly’s flawless fix corrector pen to neaten up a manicure.
Thanks for the tip. I bought one from Avon a while ago but it was so-so. Perhaps Orly will be a better product.
The orly one gets my vote much brighter and more exciting.
Still quite tempted by the yellow orly
Is that so you can match it with your new car? 😉
Looking at the pictures I think they look quite different from each other. One is bluer in tone. The other a greener tone. I have to get Gumdrop. I have a mini of the Essie and just ordered the regular size. I’m not sick of the pastels. I haven’t worn any yet. They are so pretty all lined up together.
yup Sheenie you guessed it bout the yellow
These colours look so good on you. And so bad on me!
[…] I examined the results, I immediately thought it bore a striking similarity to Orly’s Gumdrop so I had to grab both bottles for confirmation. It isn’t and you can see […]

I just wondered whether you have tried Orly Nail Repair Kit if you get a split nail and if not, can you recommend a product please?
I haven’t tried any nail repair kits personally. I think Helen knows a fair amount about them so I’ll flag your comment up with her.
