I saw Moon Over Mumbai recently on the wonderful Lipglossiping and it reminded me that I needed to dig it out and give it a proper review.
Moon Over Mumbai is from OPI’s India Collection. With the exception of Black Cherry Chutney and the soon-to-be-reviewed Yoga-Ta Get This Blue, I really don’t think India is one of OPI’s standout collections. Bad brushes, strange shades, weird formula.
I just don’t quite know what to make of Moon Over Mumbai. You know I love a grey, and whenever I went to my stash to find something appealing, I would
inevitably reach for this, only to put it back as I remembered what hard work it is.
This polish is ridiculously sheer. This was six coats. Yep, you read it right, six coats.
Why? I know it is meant to be a shimmery, moon-like shade but sheer polish with a hint of grey doesn’t really do a lot for me. When it finally built to being an opaque, it didn’t do a lot for me either.
Just kind of blah, and just not worth the effort. Of course the drying time took forever. I can’t even see it as a layering topcoat either – it would make your polish appear milky and drab. Maybe just one for the people that like pretty sheer
shades that are neutral and very work-safe.
If you like the pale grey shade, I’d definitely recommend you go for one of the Models Own greys – opaque in one coat and about £4 cheaper too.
On a separate note, I want to ask my international readers something. On every street in the UK, you can easily locate any number of Indian restaurants and curry houses. In fact, apparently the chicken tikka masala is Britain’s most popular dish. The man of the house and I were wondering if it is the same anywhere else, or if it’s just an English trend? Just curiosity really.

Your nails look like little crescent moons with it on!
I really liked the India collection, Yoga-ta Get This Blue was definitely the standout, it’s one of my all time favourites. Maybe you’d prefer Sheer Your Toys from last years Holiday in Toyland collection, if you don’t have it? It’s a light grey with lovely shimmer and is opaque in 2 coats. Brand New Skates from the same collection is fab too for a more silvery grey, but is probably a 3 coater to get it opaque.
quite possibly the blandest colout i have ever seen. Surprise surprise i am not liking this un
I’m still not certain about India – the ones I’ve reviewed so far I haven’t really liked.
Sheer Your Toys, however….an all time classic! Review here:

I really wanted BNS for ages and was a bit underwhelmed when I did finally get it. I’ll be giving it a whirl again soon though
🙂
Thanks Lisey!
I didn’t think you would. I don’t either really. It is quite inoffensive but damn it was a lot of work to get there! Just not worth it.
6 coats is outrageous. mind you thats the prob i found with sonic bloom its so sheer that i lose patience
I think anything you put on your nails looks gorgeous! Six coats of polilsh, no thanks! Maybe you could try dumping in some old eye shadow that you don’t use anymore.
Mmmmmm…….I don’t think I like or dislike it…….its a bit blah…..loved the Essie one’s you gave me the link for I do wear a bit of blah nail polish from time to time depending on what’s on at work……wouldn’t ever use a polish that took 6 coats that’s for sure…I’m usually a two coat and go gal!
Great review, I bet you nearly finished the bottle with 6 coats on your gorgeous nails!
I really like the slight pearlescence this shade has… but I don’t think I could stand the drying time on that many coats again and like you say… rubbish for layering.
Thanks for the linky and compliment xx
Have you got any from the Espana collection yet? I bought my first yesterday, Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees and I’m so disappointed with it!
I really love this one. It’s good for the times I need to sport a work appropriate manicure. I agree that it is ridiculously sheer. I tried four coats one day for the hell of it and it looked good but I couldn’t bring myself to do that again. Now I just slap on two and call it good.
I can’t remember if I’ve reviewed Sonic Bloom or not. If not I think I shall be trying it as a layering polish over another colour.
Lucy, that is SUCH a good idea. Thankyou. I may well give that a shot to thicken it up. I’ll let you know how I get on.
Blah is right really. Are you going to get any of the Essies?
Thankyou! Even if it was hard work 😉
And you’re welcome!
I got Barefoot In Barcelona

…but none of the others grabbed me enough. Suzi Skis was the only other one that tempted me a little bit so I’m intrigued as to why you don’t rate it – tell me more!
Looks like we’re all agreed! Pretty enough but a bit of a struggle!
SIX COATS! My god woman you have nail dedication! I don’t think I could go to all that effort for the colour to be honest. I wonder what it would be like to use it over an opaque colour.

Well the first coat is like applying water to your nails! It’s ridiculously thin. And the colour just isn’t what I expected, it’s just an off black really, not the smokey grey/blue I was hoping for. I might give the purple and the green a go, hopefully the formula will be better!
Anything that requires more than 2 coats loses my interest. I think it’s a pretty colour, but far too much like hard work!!
