OPI Ali’s Big Break

Do you know, I haven’t even thought to Google when the Burlesque film comes out in the UK. It’s vaguely on my periphery that OPI’s Holiday collection is based on this upcoming movie, but really, I hadn’t thought about it further than that. I do think Christina Aguilera has a cracking voice though so I may well go and see it when it’s out. Hmm.

I had a Burlesque dance lesson once, as the “keep them active and sober” Saturday afternoon activity on a friend’s hen party in Edinburgh. Well, it was Burlesque and pole dancing. I survived the trauma of (soberly) lapdancing my female friend. I did a good job of flouncing around the room waving my feather boa around. I refused to pretend to strip. And as for the pole dancing? The less said about that the better. I take my hat off to those girls who can pole dance. It’s bloody difficult.

So, on to the polish. Ali’s Big Break has the fantastic honour of being quite possibly one of the best reds I have every tried. I’m still madly in love with Crimson Carol and An Affair in Red Square  (both of which are desperately calling to be re-photpgraphed) but this just hit the spot somehow.

A cooler, more blue-toned red jelly, Ali’s Big Break (which I am presuming is named after one of the characters in the film) contains the most beautiful and mesmerising pink glass flecked shimmer. Although I’ve always been of the opinion that red and pink clash wildly, for some reason this just works. Perfectly.

If I had any small whinge, it would be that the polish is sheerer than I’d like. This is three coats over a thick base of ridge filler, and in some lights I could still spy my VNL. But that’s a teeny gripe for something that is so beautiful. It’s the best red I’ve ever found for my skintone and I am so happy that I have this to wear all through the Christmas season. I was sad when I had to take it off, and that is unusual for me as I usually get bored of reds after only a day of wear.

What do you think? Could this be the red for you? And have you ever had a Burlesque dancing lesson? Let me know!

Helen

  1. I love this on you. I’ve added this to my list. I have to thoroughly check out all the new collections coming out. I’ve had to buy more containers to put my polish in! I love reds and this one is a beauty. Your nails are looking gorgeous. I would just about die if I had to give anyone of my friends a lap dance. Yet you had to do it sober, eek! Pole dancing must be really hard. Looks like hard work. I’ve only seen it on TV and that’s enough.

  2. Helen, I just picked this up at a beauty supply store the other day and had to look up your post, after the fact, to see if you’d tried/reviewed it and voila – so you have! I am actually planning on doing a pedi with this today if I can squeeze it in. I do think it looks very ‘complex’ for a shimmery red. A bit bright/light red for my taste but I haven’t yet applied it and it DOES look fabulous on your nails. It really did stand out for me in the store and it was their last one so I snagged it. I will give it a go and thanks for blogging on Burlesque!

  3. Had it done on the toes but not too wild about it. It’s a little too orange/red or something? I was just hoping it would be a slightly deeper color but oh well. It still looks festive and fun but think it will either be for my toes or for nails in summer because it’s a ‘brighter’ red.
