Today I have a guest review for you by my friend Jasmine of Oxford Jasmine fame. Jasmine is a very talented make-up artist with a great blog and fantastic You Tube tutorials. Please check her out!
Nubar Dolcetto (£8.00 for 15ml at http://www.beautyshed.co.uk) caught my eye as part of the Vineyard Collection.I guess I was drawn to it as I am missing red wine. So I guess at least I can look at my nails and remember fondly what it was like…
Nubar/Beauty Shed describes this nail varnish as “A rich bold berry red,
ripe and glossy” and it certainly is deep whilst remaining bold but
never brazen. I would say this is one of my more sophisticated and
elegant colours that I could wear anywhere. I am imagining dinner
parties, cocktail lounges or even a ball. Ha ha! It is beautifully
understated in that there is no glitter or shimmer. The glitter imp in
me thinks that it would look amazing with a deep blue glitter over the
top though. Gold or silver would kind of ruin it the maturity of the
colour and depth, I feel.
My nails don’t feel like there is too much polish but three coats takes
time! They feel smooth and shiny. It does take a while to dry and feel
soft but doesn’t seem to snag as much as other nail polishes I’ve tried
in three coats. I think if the formulation were thicker it wouldn’t need
three coats, however if it were thicker I don’t think I would find it as
satisfying to apply. There was no glooping from the brush, it was easy
to shape the nail bed and easy to work under the tip. I guess as this
polish ages in the bottle, like a good vintage wine, it will get better
to apply! Oh I am so corny!
Finish-wise, it is beautifully glossy, it looks wet and hardly needs a top coat to bring about the extra shine. In these pictures I am wearing it on a Mavala Nailshield basecoat – a 2 step reinforcing and protecting system for my fragile and flaky nails. However, it did take three coats of Dolcetto to get this even depth of rich colour. The first coat was a lovely raspberry colour but as stripey as anything.
The second coat looked hideous, so messy and uneven. I was beginning to despair that this wasn’t going to be any good! Phew, a third coat and it’s a luscious cherry tone that is so very appealing. Chippage was minimal in fact I haven’t had a chip yet but tipwear was inevitable. Taking it off was also easy, I didn’t get any staining of the cuticles or surrounding skin.
Despite a few inconveniences, Nubar Dolcetto has made it in to my top nail varnishes and I am certainly glad I bought it.

It’s nice. Glossy. But not worth eight of my English pounds. My Nubars (OK, all two of them) have their drawbacks so it’s not a brand I’ve had any luck with.
For that money I’m going BB Couture, Barielle or loads of lovely Misas!
Jasmine, thank you for writing a great review. I think this colour looks beautiful on your nails and against your skin tone. I’m not sure if I would personally buy it as it’s quite a safe colour especially as Nubar have other shades that make me drool.
Liking this one but wouldn’t rush out as I have quite a few safe dark colours
Thank you for the recommendations for new brands! I think Safe is a good way to describe it, safe for all events if you’re uncertain about what to wear.
Jasmine, thankyou for taking the time to review this for us. I love the shade – in fact, I am wearing a very similar one today myself!
