Ever since the “mannequin hand” trend hit the blogosphere, I have been inundated with requests to review this polish.
It’s a relatively innocuous little bottle, and I have to be honest in that in have no recollection of whether I bought this one for myself, or had it thrown in as part of one of Nails Inc’s numerous offers. It didn’t really excite me, so it has lurked in the back of my stash for a year or so.
Anyway. For those of you wanting to try out the mannequin hand trend, this isn’t a bad place to start. However, be warned going in that this doesn’t have the level of pigment I would have liked. This is three coats, over two coats of OPI Ridge Filler.
As a side note, I adore ridge riller. It works to give your nails a milky smoothness that somehow fills in all the gaps and dents of your nail surface, and also acts to dull the nail line, meaning that you don’t need to do as many coats of a sheerer polish. Of course, you could just paint on a white opaque base but I worry that a bright white base might manipulate the colour.
Anyway, back to the point. Basil Street, fact fans, is a road in West London. It doesn’t seem that remarkable – housing a few hotels and doctor’s surgeries and that’s about it. Maybe that’s why such a bland polish was named after it? Who knows?
It’s a nice, subtle creamy shade that doesnt lean too strongly towards brown, grey or yellow, which makes me think that it would be suitable for most skintones. Are you a fan of the mannequin look? I showed it to the man of the house, whose response was “dull”. I agree. Work appropriate and all that, but not the most exciting shade out there.
This reminds me of milky coffee – which I hate.
Ridge-filler is an essential for me as I am now old enough to have ridges the depth of the Marianas Trench. This reminds me to buy some more because my bottle is at the sticky residue stage.
Its very work appropriate but its not a look I particularly favour it has to be said! I’m suffering with flaking nail edges at the moment which are driving me potty!
Urgh, no way! I agree, it looks like milky coffee (or tea). Whatever possessed them to create such a hideous colour?
Looks kind of boring – have you tried putting a goldy holo or Rainbow over it?
makes me want to vomit hideous hideous
I’m sure you knew I wasn’t going to like this!
It’s not working for me either, looks like toffee yogurt (mmm, toffee yogurt).
I use ridge filler since I have a couple of little peels. I don’t care for this shade too much. It’s too dull and I agree with “the man of the house”. I usually don’t mind these shades too much. This one just does’t do it for me.
it made me think of cold tea! Ha!
Do you use a glass file? I have had far less flaking on my nail edges since I stopped using a cardboard one.
People are going mad for this colour, you know…
I wore it for a day before getting bored and layering some glitter over it that I needed to review! It made a nice base…
Haha no mannequin hands for you then 😉
Don’t worry, there are some better ones on the way!
Haha yes – cold tea / coffee / toffee yoghurt….none of them really great nail looks…
Me either Lucy. It’s just blah, isn’t it.
Yes but what a great colour for the finger you insert down your throat! 😉
