All too often I hear English people whinging that our friends across the pond have access to all the best polishes. Which, in some instances, is true. I’d love to be able to walk into shops and buy China Glaze, or pay £5.00 for an OPI.
However, once in a while, something comes out that gets the US in all of a tizz. And I’m talking about this – Lancome’s Pop Petrol nail varnish, a European limited edition.
I’ve never used a Lancome polish before. I have a couple of their Juicy Tube lipglosses but to be honest, the state of the ladies I see on various Lancome counters is always enough to put me off. But I was intrigued by the hype and wanted to check it out for myself.
Typically, this was launched in a month where I had no option to get near a Lancome counter, so the fabulous Luce from Get Lippie came to my rescue. by the way, if you areb’t already familiar with her blog, you should be. Featuring beauty, organic products and weekly makeovers, it is a must-read.
I’m glad I did try this out, even though it was £14 – this is a gorgeous nail varnish. The thing that really impressed me was the quality of the application. Thick and beautifully pigmented, which I really wasn’t expecting. I thought it would be runny and jelly-like but in fact, it was the opposite, almost like a shimmery creme. I did two coats just to make sure, but shorter nails would be fine with one thick coat.
In the bottle it appears as a teal blue, very dark, with silver shimmer veined through it. Thisis replicated perfectly on the nail, although you may need to hunt for it in certain lower lights. It does take longer to dry than your average China Glaze or so on, but not significantly so.
Given the thickness of the consistency, this did chip after a couple of days, but given how fast it was to apply, I forgive it.
So what do you think? Love it? Not so keen? Worth the hefty price tag? Reckon I can sell it for $300 on eBay like Chanel Jade is currently retailing at? I feel faint just thinking about that…

To be honest it doesn’t look that different in the photos from the Models’ Own black you had before. Maybe the difference is more obvious in person though.
It is £14 online. For £50 worth of stuff you get free postage so I’m betting it’s possible to trade in PP on ebay and make a small profit. But I’m not brave enough to try.
In other swatches it looks green and petrol-like so I’m guessing you had trouble photographing this?
I had huge trouble photographing this, you’re right. The pics were in natural light and every time I managed to capture the glimmer, it distorted the colour. I’d rather have more accurate colour shots – this definitely isnt green, although it does have a hint of it. It’s more of an off-black with silver shimmer.
And as for the eBay – that is very enterprising!
Yeah – it looks very black inside but you can pick up the green hints from time to time. It’s not a relative of the matte black though.
This does look very different to how it does in the shop. I think I may just have to part with £14 and see how I like it on me. It is pay day on Friday after all….
Is that really how much people are paying for Chanel Jade?!!! As much as I love nail polish, and have gone to great lengths to get certain shades, those people are just pathetic!
Mmmm its a bit “sludge” like!
I like that colour but i’m thinking more than 2 times to get this one or not- ~20€ is really pricey….
Anyway I know a store where the previous (lancome) polishes are dusting (indigo paris and the golden one, forgot the name)
i think i’m gonna get them when the store has their next sale ^^
It’s not really as sludgey as it looks in these pics, though I can appreciate how difficult it was to photograph, it’s a LOT darker than the Lancome promos made it look.
It is a very, very dark teal, with hints of silver shimmer. Lovely colour, but might have been nicer if it had been a touch brighter.
I used to love Lancome stuff but got sick of their very rude and unhelpful counter assistants to have refused to buy their products for over 15 yrs.
Can’t say this is inspiring me to change my mind
This doesn’t look very teal-like to me. Looks like a deep green and sludge like as previously described. It does look pretty on you.
Yes that’s a good idea. I think the price is more for the application than the colour, if that makes sense.
Yes – thankyou – I’d have appreciated a tad more green in it, I have to say.
Yeah I have to say I’ve never come across a great Lancome assistant. I’m sure they are out there though.
I want! I love lancome polishes 🙁 Love it!
