Illamasqua Light Liquid Foundation

Hunting down the right foundation is like finding the shoe that fits Cinderella – it’s got to fit your face perfectly (not your feet though like Cinders).  So when new make-up darlings Illamasqua recently relaunched their Light Liquid Foundation and very kindly sent me a sample to try, I instinctively had high expectations.

This liquid foundation has been reformulated to offer a more textured, natural appearance.  There are 16 shades available and thankfully Illamasqua provide a helpful guide with pictures of models, which gives a better indication than swatches.

I went for shade 233 (‘for olive skin with golden undertones’) but upon receiving the bottle, I did raise my eyebrows as it appears to be lighter than my regular MAC Studio Sculpt foundation (shade NC42) and almost pinkish in tone, as you can see from the swatches.

Well here is my mug shot with and without flash for your amusement, and also to illustrate this review:

without flash

with flash (horrific picture by the way)

It does look slightly too light for me under flash light, although colleagues at work seemed impressed by the finished look.  The shade does fool you as once it blends into your skin, it camouflages with your skin tone.

A good foundation also feels light yet gives the right amount of coverage, which Illamasqua delivers on.  It also stayed on all day without retouching, blending quickly and beautifully for a smooth, satin look but I am still in two minds about the actual shade against my skin tone.

I have been using this product for a couple of weeks now and I will continue with it for I value what Illamasqua create and I haven’t been disappointed so far.  Have you given Illamasqua’s foundation a try?  If so, what do you think of it?

Illamasqua’s Light Liquid Foundation retails for £21 for 30ml and can be bought online at www.illamasqua.com or at London’s Selfridges.  Exciting news is Illamasqua will be opening the doors to its first ever flagship store in London in mid September, on 20 Beak Street, south of Carnaby Street.

  1. That is not a horrific picture. Your just giving a strange look! You need to smile. It does blend well with your complexion. Maybe try a shade down at the store to see if it would be a better match. It’s really tough to pick the right shade. I used a baked mineral makeup by Laura Geller. Blends in well and can be used by many shades of complexions. I don’t like liquid makeup anymore. I’ve been wearing a powder for years.

  2. I hate smiling for blog photos! I don’t look comfortable. 🙂 The shade below is 240 for deep oliver skin with golden undertones…perhaps I could try that. The one above is definitely too light (215 – medium to olive skin with neutral undertones). MAC is spot on but then they do have about 40 shades. Thanks for your feedback, Lucy.

  3. It looks like a nice finish. I haven’t tried any Illamasqua foundation yet as I would need help colour matching. I never get it right on my own! I’m interested in this one particularly as I like fairly light coverage. Thanks for sharing your thoughts x

  4. It looks fine to me as regards colour. But if you don’t like it then it’s not worth wearing.

I like a total matte finish so this is too dewy for me. I know it isn’t at all dewy but it isn’t a heavy matte so not for me.

  5. I’ve been wanting to try this since they relaunched it, but I don’t want to guess my shade without seeing them in person again. Illamasqua are great for foundations as they cater for really light and really dark skintones.

  6. Hi Jenni, if you prefer maximum matte finish, then this obviously isn’t the one for you. I know I don’t like matte as it makes me look dehydrated. I think I will try another shade because I did pick this from their chart. It’s not always convenient to pop to an Illamasqua counter and the last time I did, they didn’t have any foundations in stock or I’d have got the correct shade confirmed for me.
