Last Christmas (which was only last month), an idea popped into my head that I could do with a new hairdryer. My current one has been slacking for a while and I am sure it’s not as good as it used to be plus I’m holding part of it together with parcel tape after dropping and breaking the air vent.
I fuss a hell of a lot with my hair, pampering it with more than the average priced shampoos, conditioners, styling products and tools as well as regular visit to the salon so finding a reliable and high performance hair dryer is a big deal for me. And why my search brought up this beast: the ghd air™ hairdryer.
The reviews were strongly in ghd’s favour and having experienced two models of their innovative hair straighteners (pretty sure ghd paved the wave for ceramic coated straighteners therefore should be considered pioneers in this field), I was full of confidence.
I had a birthday gift voucher from Feel Unique teasing me so I took the chance to cash it in. For a limited time, the hairdryer currently has £20 knocked off its retail price (which is normally £99) and with a portion off from the voucher, it made the final cost less painful to bear. The thing is, I don’t mind paying full whack for a hair product that works. You can find cheaper alternatives with some make-up products and the quality won’t differ much, if hardly. With haircare, there is a difference. And I’m not being superficial.
When I opened the big parcel to reveal a big black box marked with ghd’s iconic logo, I let out a squeal. It is gorgeous, seriously gorgeous the moment you take the sleek, black device out of its box and hold it. It is ergonomically designed so gripping its handle is so comfortable and the device is lighter than my last dryer, which is also bulky in comparison to ghd.
After I had stopped caressing it, I took a closer look at the controls. There are two speed settings and three heat settings – cold air, medium, maximum heat plus a cool shot button, which are all easy to reach and use. ghd also includes two concentrator nozzles – one 65mm and the other is 85mm – which click into the dryer securely and there is a generous 3 metre cable.
The ghd air™ is powered by a 2100 watt motor which is surprisingly low in sound and boasts a fancy advanced ionic technology that combats frizz and flyaway hair.
From my first use the difference was abundantly noticeable: the air targets the hair directly thanks to the design of the dryer and the nozzle, and crucially, the top heat setting actually did not feel as hot as my old hairdryer does. Anyone knows the smell of singed hair is not something to mock, nor are split ends.
Is this jargon for real? Heavens, yes! My fine hair normally would take about 10 minutes to blow-dry with my last hairdryer. With the ghd air™, I timed it to 4 minutes and 35 seconds. Bone dry. This is just roughly brushing it through and blasting my hair with it. I rarely have the time nor can I be bothered to section it. Less than 5 minutes, come on! That’s a world record surely. I have managed to time my make-up to that duration but that’s only covering foundation, blusher and a quick lip gloss.
So if I haven’t made it obvious, hair definitely dries better and faster with the ghd air™ hairdyer. I get smooth, frizz-free results and consequently haven’t felt the need to straighten my hair after, which is brilliant news for my frazzled follicles when I couldn’t avoid using them every day.
It won’t make you a cup of tea but it will make daily maintenance effortless and a sheer pleasure. This is definitely something that stands head and shoulders above its competitors and I can’t see anything else on the market that is a threat. Yes, it’s pricey so it’s down to how much it matters to the individual. For me, it saves bags of time, gives me a blow-dry as good as a salon with minimal damage and contributes to a healthy growth as I am not relentlessly torturing my tresses with styling tools. I’m in love.
