This humble polish by Boots No7 blazed a bit of a trail across the blogosphere back in the early days of summer. And true to form, here I am, reviewing it
several months later. Whoops.
Beanie is neither new nor original. I was thinking that I was not entirely sure why everyone got so excited about it but then I had a reality check whereby it dawned on me that not everyone owns or is aware of the veritable merits of OPI’s Over The Taupe, or You Don’t Know Jacques (seen here).
If you’re looking to get on board the mushroom train
(what an image, hehe) then Beanie will serve you well. If you want to pop down to your local Boots and come home with something a little bit different, then you can’t go far wrong here. If you don’t want to pay OPI prices, then go for it. But if you want a polish that lasts longer than a couple of days then I’d be tempted to steer clear.
Beanie is nice and pigmented, indeed, more so than YDKJ, and this was only two coats. But I found that after a couple of days, it was looking somewhat sorry for itself and was chipping and fraying around the edges. So all in all – functional but not one I’d turn to if I wasn’t planning on changing my polish for a few days.
This retails at £6.25, and to be honest, that’s a lot of money for a high street polish. What I just don’t understand is that Boots 17, the cheaper range, seems to have a better formula to their nail varnish. My love for number 17 polishes is well documented and I just cannot suss out why Number 7 doesn’t love me as much.
I know there are people who adore this shade, and I have to say, there’s nothing wrong with it at all – I just have a preference for the OPI – maybe because it leans more towards the brown side of taupe, and on me, Beanie was oddly green and less flattering. Not to mention the chips (again).
Beanie was given to me free of charge for review purposes.

Yeah, No7s NEVER last on me! I only buy them when I have a voucher because the chipping is less upsetting on a £1.25 polish. Pity, because they do some great colours…
I love this shade, I just dislike working with No 17’s formula! x
It’s OK. But they have such an image problem for me….It’s a bit on the grey side too.
I have a love/hate relationship with this polish, I love the colour but I find it doesn’t last as you found too. I agree re 17 polishes being easier to work with and half the price of no.7!
Yuck looks like cement
I like the shade. It’s a deep shade of taupe. My polishes don’t go that long without chipping. Since I have lots of polishes I get to try more shades. I think it looks nice on you.
Oooh, cannot say I like this. It’s just too dead looking. I can’t really imagine a skin tone this would look good on. 🙁
How does this compare to Barry M Mushroom? They look pretty similar in the bottle…
LiseyDuck – Mushroom is far and away superior. Let me bump my review of it up to next week and you can see for yourself. Hang on…
Sophie – I feel exactly the same!
Jenni – I agree – they are working on their image though.
Emily – Given the choice I would use No17 any day of the week!
Britny – Ha! Its maybe greener than cement but not far off.
Lucy – Thankyou. I love how you are always so positive!
Beth – I know what you mean – it is very cool toned.

Aww, thank you so much for sending me the link to this review. This is super useful and answers exactly my questions. Not sure I would pay £6.75 or more for it, but with a no.7 voucher, it looks like it’s definitely worth it. Funny you mention no.17, because as the eye shadows go, I think exactly the same. How funny is that pigmentation of shadows is soooooooooooooo much better with no.17 than with no.7! I don’t get it at all. thank you so much xx Yes, it is a bit greeny tinge to it but it’s not bad I think. yay 🙂 going to get it this week xx
