20 Questions with Nixxy!

Read Time:7 Minute, 7 Second

Today’s 20 Questions features none other than Nixxy of Nixxy\’s Nails fame. Nixxy was one of the first bloggers I got to know back at the start of 2009, when Just Nice Things made it’s debut. Nixxy’s blog is aone of my all time favourites, from her great writing, Weekend Funnies, and of course the fact that it is home to the amazing MWCILTRMD (Men Whose Chests I’d Like To Rake My Nails Down). Check it out here!

1)      Why did you start your blog?

I think it was boredom. I’d moved interstate away from all my family and friends. That, and I couldn’t find swatches of the Zoyas I’d just bought on Ebay, so I thought I might as well do it. Being allergic to formaldehyde and formaldehyde resin (although it’s been revealed recently that polish companies have mis-labelled these chemicals and they should be listed as “Formalin”) means that I can’t use certain polishes. I thought I might as well document what I was using for other freaks like me.

 2)      How long have you been blogging for?

My first post was the 4th of November 2008, so nearly two years.

3)      What do you enjoy most about blogging?

Oh, the girly friends from all over the world and home! I have befriended so many fabulous women as a direct result of the blog (and it’s Twitter account). The blogosphere really can change your life in amazing ways!

4)      What frustrates you most about blogging?

The amount of time spent water-marking my images so that people don’t use my hands to sell their stuff on Ebay really annoys me and makes me less disposed to post now. It takes so much more time and fiddling around to do an article.

5)      How much time a week do you spend on your blog / reading other people’s blogs?

Until recently, quite a lot – an hour or two a day. But since the moving- house/ redonkulously crazy trip to London thing came up in the last month or two the blog has suffered. It’s slipped to maybe an hour a week, tops.

6)      What advice do you have for aspiring beauty bloggers?

I’m a beauty blogger?? Ha! Who’d a thunk it? It’s quite simple – be honest, be yourself!

7)      What other hobbies/interests do you have?

Well even when I’m not on a screen writing contract, I’m always writing something. That’s my main focus. After that, it’s just the usual stuff like TV, movies, breeding miniature Stegosauruses and reading.

8)      How many bottles of nail varnish do you own?

ELEVENTYMILLIONTHOUSAND! No, actually mine is quite piddly compared to most blogger’s stashes – about 200, give or take my top coats, base coats, etc.

9)      Do you set yourself a shopping budget, or do you purchase on an as-and-when basis?

When I can afford it I usually do a bulk order from America, as Australia has utterly ridiculous polish prices and not much brand choice. I’m on a no-buy now as I’m saving money for the trip to London, though.

10)     What is your favourite make-up brand, and why?

I don’t have one. I bounce from brand to brand with no loyalty and don’t wear much make up as a rule anyway. My fave polish brand would probably be a draw between BB Couture, Nubar and Zoya, though. All are allergy-free companies (for me, anyway) so I can plunder their whole back-catalogue without obsessively checking ingredients labels.

11)     Do you ever leave the house without wearing make-up?

Always! The only “makeup” I wear is coloured lip gloss. I don’t even own foundation at the moment. My eyeshadows are at least 7 years old and hardly used. I can’t remember if I own mascara. Have you all fainted yet?

 12)     What is your favourite beauty product and why?

I MUST have lip stick/gloss/balm. I can’t live without it. It adds colour to the face, and my lips actually sting the moment I don’t have any on. I think I’m addicted.  Right now I wear (Aussie brand) BYS’s “Forbidden Red” gloss when I go out in public. It has a mirror and light in the applicator for check-ups.  I also love uncoloured Coke, Vanilla Coke and Gingerbread flavoured lip balm from Lip Smackers to wear at home.  A close second, if I can have one is a new discovery – Argan oil. I use it on my hair and skin and will rave to anyone and everyone about it. It kicks Redken All Soft’s ass!

13)     What is your favourite nail varnish of all time? (yep, only one!)

Uuumm…um…um…um…I think Zoya’s Roxy.

14)     Tell us about the best holiday you’ve ever been on.

Probably when we went to Coral Bay & Shark Bay (at home in Western Australia) for about 2 months when I was 9. Lived in a tent, fed dolphins, was visited by Bruce the Easter Bungarrow lizard (Easter Bunny couldn’t make it), glass-bottom boat trips, visits to Shell Beach etc. There was a huge summer deluge one day and we dug moats all around the tents to stop the red mud getting in. Then us kids proceeded to sit in said mud and completely paint my uncle’s car – and I mean COMPLETELY! When the adults saw it…priceless! The photos they took of us and the car take pride of place to this day 🙂

15)     What would be your ideal day off?

A sleep-in, followed by a breakfast of magical no-fat no-sugar Krispy Kreme donuts, a private screening of a sci-fi movie with lots of things blowing up and a kick-ass heroine with a hunky sidekick – written by me. Then more Krispy Kremes, then more sleep. On a bed of Krispy Kremes. With the hunky sidekick…

16)     What is your favourite TV show?

Gawd – that’s like choosing a favourite child! Um…probably “Firefly”. Extra points for the tragic way it was cancelled. No one beats Captain Tight-Pants. Well…OK – quite a lot of people have beaten Captain Tight-Pants. But he always gets up again, and that’s the main thing.

17)     What music do you enjoy listening to?

Hooo! Can I write an essay? Music is a great love of mine (as the 4 ipods I own will attest) and I spend as much time trawling music blogs as polish ones. I make soundtracks to all my writing projects, so music is an integral part of my “creative process”, to sound all art-wanky! I think it may be physically impossible for me to drive my car without the stereo on. I’ll take bits from all genres except Country and Opera (what genre does Nickelback come under? Whatever it is – that too), but I guess 80% of my collection probably comes under the extremely broad umbrella of “Electronic”. And by that I don’t mean annoying repetitive Euro-Techno crap. I’m talking Lamb, Hybrid, The Prodigy, Florence & the Machine, Busta Rhymes, Roisin Murphy, Moloko, Burial, Bloc Party, Garbage, (vintage) Marilyn Manson, Janet Jackson, Puppini Sisters, Unkle, Frankmusik, Prince, Bjork, Tricky, Bertie Blackman, Noisia, Fiona Apple, Basement Jaxx – many and varied!

I guess I have my Dad to blame – he’s a big music freak, too. One of my earliest memories is bumping down a red dirt track on holiday in the middle of the outback, listening to Jean Michel Jarre’s “Le Concerts Le Chine” punctuated with Bowie and Queen! I also have a soft spot for good 80’s pop like the Eurythmics, A-Ha, INXS, Stevie Nicks, The Bangles, New Order, Soft Cell, etc. – stuff that reminds me of my childhood and lets me dance like a dork.

 18)     What is your favourite food?

Anything bad for me. Chocolate coated, dynamite-filled Krispy Kreme maybe…

19)     Where would you most like to visit in the world? (money no object).

Well – London! And I’m less than a month off from that. So as a second, I’d say Venice.

20)     Tell us a secret…

I have weirdly nubile toes. I can do the Star Trek “Vulcan Salute” with them.

Thankyou Nixxy! Remember, if you have a blog and would like to feature on 20 Questions, please send us an email to the usual address!

  1. I love Nixxy and wish she could post every day! She always makes me laugh. There’s been many a soda splattered monitor. Her writing is priceless! I don’t know why she doesn’t have her own wacky scifi show on TV. I’m sure it would be fantastic and also hysterical. I can’t even do the Vulcan salute with my fingers. She is amazing from head to toe!

  2. Oh, I LOVE this – Nixxy is one of the first ladies I “met” when blogging too! I agree with Lucy she SHOULD have a wacky scifi show, I’d be watching it every day. I love her swatches, but I love her writing just as much. The Phalanges of Terror series is a case in point. 🙂
Nixxy I hope you have much success and fun in London!
