Simply Scrub: Body Scrubs

These days it’s all too easy to stick ‘organic’ in a product name and pull the wool over consumers’ eyes but there is a new name in skincare from the US that is genuinely pure and unadulteredly organic. Step forward Simply Scrub and take a bow.

Simply Scrub specialises in simply 100% organic and natural-based body scrubs made in the USA and they very kindly sent me a few of their products to try. These are available in four different aromatic varieties – Rose, Chocolate, Coffee and Soursop – to exfoliate, moisturise and feed the skin. In fact Simply Scrub addresses a number of skin issues including eczema, scars, acne, blackheads, dark spots and dead skin and recommends which of its scrubs best works for a particular skin concern.

The scrubs are available in large pouches (255ml) and handy sized pots (103ml). The packaging of the pots is basic but it does the job – it’s lightweight and secure so it’s ideal for travel. It’s just not fancy looking and that’s perfectly fine because as a customer, if the packaging is impressive, you pay for it.

More importantly the scrubs contain 100% natural and organic ingredients – there isn’t one preservative in here, which means there is little or no chance of anything irritating the skin. Naturally scented with natural antibacterial, moisturising and toning properties, these really have a homemade feel to them.

Let’s take a closer look at each one, shall we? First up is the rose one, which contains Rose Buds Petals, Avocado Oil, Brown Sugar, Sweet Almond Oil, Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil and Tea Tree Oil.

Sadly this one isn’t as effective as scrubs go; I couldn’t feel the sugar granules but the rose petals and oils soften and smooth the skin. It is a gentle and soothing mixture, and the rose scent is gorgeous but it failed to impress me. The petals do make for a messy tub but luckily they wash away and down the plug hole so there is no fear of a blockage in the bath.

Soursop is a completely new ingredient to me. Apparently it’s a superskin food, a spiky green fruit grown in the southern hemisphere with a bright, refreshing scent. This scrub is infused with soursop leaves packed full of vitamins A, B and C which help to reduce irritation from eczema, rheumatism, and other skin conditions. The scrub also contains Dead Sea Mineral Salt, Brown Sugar, Mint Leaves, Green Tea, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E and Tea Tree Oil. Interestingly, the appearance and texture looks like henna leaves to me.

There is quite a potent smell to the Soursop scrub (quite anti-septic/witch hazel like), which I don’t mind. As a scrub it’s brilliant; the texture from the salt and sugar combined with the oils exfoliates and moisturises, leaving the skin feeling soft and supple. I also tried a sample of the chocolate and coffee scrub, which I would definitely purchase in full size. I like a scrub to be able to do its job of removing dead skin cells, exfoliating the surface and preventing ingrowing hairs, and these three certainly do make the mark. I would only pass up on the rose scrub – it’s just not up to my expectations and may leave many disappointed.

Simply Scrub’s pouches cost $24 (about £18) and the posts are $14 (about £11). There are gift sets of 3 potted scrubs from $36 (£27) with free shipping within the US for orders over $40. Simply Scrub do ship internationally but please be aware of shipping and custom charges. The alternative is to order through a US mail forwarding company like My Mallbox and have your collective orders shipped in one box, thus reducing import and delivery charges. Well, that’s what I do!
